Xena's Redemption And Tarot Symbolism
In THE BITTER SUITE

Xena and Gabrielle's relationship suffers a serious setback during the "Gab-Drag".

Introduction

^[1] In this paper I hope to explore the use of Tarot symbolism in THE BITTER SUITE (58/312). But first it will be necessary to devote some time to the exploration of the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle. Also, certain aspects of Xena's redemption must be studied so that we can see how the relationship and the redemption may have compounded to initiate a chain of events that bring these characters to "where they are" just before they go off the cliff in THE BITTER SUITE (58/312).

Xena's Redemption

^[2] Xena did not come easily to redemption. She was a murderer and a robber. She appeared content with that lifestyle until her men deposed and exiled her from her army. Xena was forced to walk the gauntlet, which nearly killed her. Then, still not having had enough of it, she devised a plan to kill Hercules. Her thinking was that her men would reinstate her as head of the army if she succeeded in killing the hero. Even when Hercules defeated her and spared her life, Xena was still not ready to find redemption. She went off to search her soul. Only then did she decide to turn her life around. Xena accepted redemption only because redemption was her final option.

Xena's Dilemma

^[3] Once Xena decided to follow the path of redemption, she was unsure about what to do to make up for her evil past. She decided on the course of fighting evil, stopping warlords, and working for the common good. She often stated that one only had to do good to be good, and that redemption and forgiveness came from within. Unfortunately, Xena did not believe this.

^[4] Xena's dilemma was that she felt she was unforgivable. Also, she engaged in an exercise of atonement through mathematical formula, simply stated: How many good deeds make up for one evil deed? Or, more specifically, how many good deeds make up for just one murder? Using the formula, the key question became: How many murders has Xena committed? In her own mind, the answer was that she could not ever successfully atone.

^[5] Another problem Xena had was that her quest for redemption was only a surface pursuit. Although her acts were both remarkable and laudable, and she truly thought she was going about it in the correct manner, and she did achieve much good, her problem remained that below the surface, she was still basically the same person. She was homicidal, angry, vengeful, self-righteous, controlling, impatient, ill-tempered, and dishonest with herself. She was also filled with such incredible rage that personal growth became extremely difficult. Eventually she came to a state of stagnation.

Xena And Gabrielle

^[6] A fact easy to forget was that Xena wanted no part of a relationship with Gabrielle in the beginning. Gabrielle forced her way into Xena's life until Xena finally accepted her. Another easily forgotten aspect of the relationship was that their friendship was not a relationship of equals. They had a relationship between a mature experienced woman of the world and a naive innocent country girl (further complicated by the fact that Xena did not want Gabrielle around in the first place). Their friendship eventually blossomed whereby they developed a deep love for one another, but Xena remained the dominant member in the relationship.

^[7] The relationship had three different aspects. There was a big sister-little sister perspective which sometimes spilled over into the aspect of a mother-daughter relationship. These two types were essentially loving and nurturing relationships. The final aspect was a knight/squire relationship which was essentially a master/servant association. All three aspects of this relationship conspired to hinder Gabrielle's growth, although Gabrielle left Poteidaia because she felt that she could not achieve any real growth in what she considered a stifling environment.

^[8] The relationship was also a symbiotic one. Xena was committed to protecting Gabrielle's physical person, while Gabrielle was committed to protecting Xena's spiritual being. Gabrielle actually had the more difficult and more important role. Xena quickly learned that she could not do without Gabrielle whereas Gabrielle discovered quite early that she could easily survive without Xena's help. Gabrielle could always go back to Poteidaia or she could go with the Amazons. This knowledge, perhaps, added to Xena's need to control the situation.

The Warrior Monk

^[9] In her quest for redemption, Xena took on the attributes of the Warrior Monk and Crusader (please note that the term "monk" refers to any man or woman who chooses to dedicate his or her life to the search for and in defense of a spiritual ideal). In Xena's case, the spiritual ideal was her redemption. It was in this sense that Xena became the Warrior Monk.

^[10] The old Xena adorned herself in gold, jewels, and silks. She drank to excess, smoked opium, and dined on exquisite foods. She was a slave to her desires and she fulfilled her wants at the expense of her own and everyone else's needs. She was excessive in her sexual gratification and she always lived in either civilized luxury or barbaric splendor.

^[11] The new Xena was a follower of the philosophy of Stoicism. Her armor and clothing were serviceable and of good quality. She was either moderate or abstinent in her appetites. She was itinerant, preferring to live on the periphery of her society, also preferring to sleep in the open on the ground rather than in shelter. She appeared to be living in self-imposed poverty. It would make more sense if both Xena and Gabrielle had horses, but the one horse and two riders became a symbol of their poverty. This was the same symbol that the Medieval Knights Templar used to signify their own poverty by representing it on their standard.

The Spiritual Quest

^[12] On one level, the television show, Xena: Warrior Princess (XWP), is essentially an allegory of the Journey to Spiritual Wholeness. In this, XWP becomes as much a spiritual quest as the search for the Holy Grail. The fact that Xena is spiritually flawed does not matter. All the knights in the Holy Grail Quest were also flawed. But Xena cannot achieve Spiritual Wholeness in her present state of stagnation. She must evolve. Also, the concept of the Warrior Monk is a flawed concept in that it needs inner growth in order to sustain itself.

^[13] In order to fulfil the quest, Xena must move beyond the concept of the Warrior Monk and assume the mantle of the Spiritual Warrior. It should be noted that the Spiritual Warrior is often a Warrior Monk, but a Warrior Monk is not always a Spiritual Warrior. The Warrior Monk merely searches for and defends a spiritual ideal, while the Spiritual Warrior embraces that ideal and becomes one with it. While Xena may exemplify the aspects of the Warrior Monk, Lao Ma is an example of the true Spiritual Warrior.

^[14] The Spiritual Warrior is that spiritually whole person for whom nothing is impossible. The Spiritual Warrior is a person of service. The truly redeemed master becomes the servant and the servant is the true master. Note that even though Gabrielle has taken on the role of the servant in the relationship, hers is the more important task. It is her duty to guide Xena toward the mantle of the Spiritual Warrior. The servant is the "Conscience Guide", and is, therefore, the true master. Thus, in order for Xena to fulfil her quest, her relationship with Gabrielle must be redefined.

Relapse And Rift

Xena is incredulous when she finds out "The child is Hope?!"

^[15] Unfortunately, if there is no growth, it is only a matter of time before a relapse occurs. The relapse actually happens when Xena learns that Caesar is in Britannia. She immediately drops everything and sets out for the island. Her hatred of Caesar is such that she is willing to aid her old enemy Boadicea. Note that Xena hates and wants revenge on Caesar because he betrayed and crucified her, leaving her for dead. Xena betrayed Boadicea and tried to kill her, but Boadicea forgives Xena. In her thirst for revenge, Xena forgets about her responsibilities to protect Gabrielle, and Gabrielle is left to the mercies of Dahak, where she loses her blood innocence and becomes impregnated with a Demon Child.

^[16] When the child is born, Xena demands that the child be killed. Xena had no right to demand this and Gabrielle had every right and duty to protect her child. Sometimes doing the right thing brings about disastrous consequences, but that does not alter the fact that the original decision was the morally correct one.

^[17] Gabrielle's big mistake occurs in Chin when she betrays Xena in the hopes of saving her soul. This incredible act of naivete, I suspect, is a direct result of a combination of the stifling of Gabrielle's growth and the traumatic effects of the events in Britannia. Also, it shows that Gabrielle does not always trust Xena to make good choices based on solid ethics. Gabrielle is beginning to think that she is sometimes better off going against Xena's will and following her own course of actions. Unfortunately for both Gabrielle and Xena, since Gabrielle was not allowed to fully develop in both wisdom and maturity, Gabrielle makes a foolish choice with disastrous consequences.

^[18] A shocked and bewildered Xena is shaken enough that she actually momentarily attains the mantel of the Spiritual Warrior. She is even able to throw the cosmic bolts, as did Lao Ma. But then, in a fit of rage, Xena kills Ming T'ien and loses everything she had gained. Lao Ma could easily have killed Ming T'ien, but she refused to. He was her child, and she did not want Xena to kill him either. She merely wanted to see him rendered harmless. What we overlook is that Xena is as much Ming T'ien's mother as is Lao Ma. While Lao Ma gave birth to the physical entity that was Ming T'ien, Xena gave birth to the spiritual entity. As Ming T'ien said to Xena, "It is you who made me into the monster I am". The killing of Ming T'ien was an act of pure murder brought about by the fact that Xena was incapable of controlling her internal rage.

^[19] The journey to Chin was an unmitigated disaster. Instead of fulfilling Lao Ma's last request, Xena ended up destroying much of what Lao Ma stood for. The relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is now seriously harmed. Xena cannot trust Gabrielle to look after her spiritual person and Gabrielle cannot trust Xena to protect her physical person.

^[20] When the fast-growing daughter of Gabrielle re-enters their lives, Gabrielle no longer trusts Xena enough to confide in her. She hides the knowledge of Hope's presence from Xena until it is too late. When Hope kills Xena's son, Solan, mistrust turns to estrangement and hatred in Xena. The Karmic Law is a cruel law; it was never meant for Xena to kill Lao Ma's son, and now Xena's own son is dead.

^[21] I feel that Gabrielle was blameless in both her protection of Hope and in the death of Solan. Gabrielle even takes on the heartbreaking task of killing Hope herself, which shows her courage, her commitment to the relationship with Xena, and her commitment to humankind as a whole. (After Hope has fully revealed herself as the Demon Child, Gabrielle is both morally right and duty bound to kill her.) ^[22] Only when Xena tries to murder her does Gabrielle finally scream out, "I hate you!" Thus, we come full circle only to find the current Xena a far worse permutation than the evil Xena we first encountered. We also see that the moment she screams, "I hate you!" is the moment Gabrielle really loses her innocence. After Gabrielle kills Meridian and loses her blood innocence, she tries to put both her life and her belief structure back together, but when she screams, "I hate you", and attacks Xena, this is an act of pure hatred and rage. In this action, Gabrielle makes a conscious decision to throw away everything she believes in for a chance at getting even with Xena.

The Tarot

^[23] Just as the Twelve Steps to Recovery has become the main tool of recovery for the mainstream self help groups, so Tarot Cards have become a major source of insight for the New Age self help movement. Affiliate groups believe that The Tarot can be a path to new self awareness and an aid to understanding the human condition as it relates to the universe.

^[24] In THE BITTER SUITE (58/312), we are introduced to a Tarot-based universe called Illusia. It is in this world that Xena and Gabrielle must work out their problems and get back on course.

^[25] To better understand how the Tarot works, I shall attempt to give some basic rules. (It should be noted that I am not a student of the Tarot, and the readers are advised to do further reading if they are interested in the subject.) Tarot Cards are dealt either face up or face down. When the card is face up, it is said to be "in the reading" when the card is face down, it is said to be "in the reverse". When the card is in the reading, this is supposed to reveal the positive aspects of the card, while the negative aspects of the card are associated with the card when it is in the reverse. The individual for whom the cards are being read is the seeker or the quarrent. A seeker often has a signature card; this card is thought to be representative of the seeker.

The Universe

^[26] "Aleph am I. From mine unfathomable will, the universe hath its beginning. In my boundless wisdom are the types and patterns of all things". The Universe is the last card in the deck, but it becomes Xena's and Gabrielle's first card. This card shows a woman representing Supreme Goodness framed in a wreath of olive leaves. She is the universal conscience. This woman caries the mandate of Heaven and she is the arbitrator of choice. The card is in reverse. This tells us that both Xena And Gabrielle have shown a refusal to learn the lessons in life. Not only are they not motivated, they are actually resistant to any change.

The Lovers

^[27] The Lovers cards depicts two naked people in the presence of an angel. This card represents the bonds of unconditional love, the polarization and attraction of opposites, and the harmonization of Duality. Note that while both lovers appear on the card together, Xena and Gabrielle arrive in Illusia separately. This is a sign of the extent of their estrangement in that they do not even show up on the same card. It also shows that both women have serious problems with duality in that they cannot reconcile the people they are with the people they need to be. It also shows that their love for each other is flawed in that it is conditional love.

The Fool

^[28] The Fool and her little dog make an interesting pair, especially since the Fool seems to be Callisto. In the royal court, the Fool is often portrayed as the wisest advisor to the monarch, and, often, as the most loyal, and as being totally without guile. The court Fool was also frequently thought to be insane. The little dog is a symbol of loyalty. In the Tarot, the Fool's wisdom is divine wisdom. The Fool freely offers this wisdom. In the Tarot, wisdom is always freely offered. In the reading, the seeker is being offered advice she would be wise not to refuse. In the reverse, the seeker does not realize the seriousness of her situation. Luckily for Xena there are so many cards following this one that the choice has already been made for her. Even though Xena would be wise to follow the Fool's advice, she refuses because the Fool seems to be Callisto.

The High Priestess\The Queen of Swords

^[29] These two cards have been chosen as Xena's signature cards. Xena is dressed in the robes of the High Priestess and she is wearing the headdress, but on her chest is a sword, the symbol of the Queen of Swords. The High Priestess of the Celestial Temple embraces metaphysical enlightenment and inner illumination. She is the daughter of the Moon, and in her headdress she wears the full moon and the crescent moon. She is the guardian of the sacred law. The Queen of Swords signifies a strong, forceful, mature woman who is intelligent and instinctive. This woman is always dangerous, whether the card is dealt up or down. In the reverse, the High Priestess signifies a conceited, selfish and ruthless woman. She is a person who is refusing to understand what must be done. The Queen of Swords in the reverse signifies a cruel and deceitful woman. She will try to deter self-reliant action and individual development in others. Note that Xena discards the Headdress of the High Priestess, thus discarding her wisdom. When the High Priestess converges with the Queen of Swords and these two cards are in the reading, the arrival of the Spiritual Warrior is immanent. This is also true for the Magician and the King of Swords.

The Wheel of Fortune

^[30] This card is one of the most symbolic cards. On the wheel are printed the words Yahweh (the unspoken name of God) and Tora (Torah). The sphinx reminds us of the transitory nature of the human condition. The jackal headed man is the Trickster and the snake is symbolic of creativity and wisdom. The four Living Creatures: the lion, the bull, the eagle and Humanity represent four signs of the zodiac, the four elements (earth, air, fire and water) and also the four gospels. In THE BITTER SUITE (58/312), they also seem to signify the struggle of life and death, specifically: the hunter and the hunted (the lion and the bull, the eagle and the snake, Xena and Gabrielle). The wheel is the wheel of destiny and of Karmic Law, but it is also the wheel of second chances. A spin of the wheel can erase the past and give a new beginning.

^[31] This card signifies that Xena must take the risk of turning her life around. Actually, in Xena's case it is not much of a risk, since she has already messed up her life so badly. She is being given a second chance and she must get it right this time. She is being freed of the consequences of past Karmic Law, but she will be bound by future Karmic Law so she must be careful. Either up or down, this is a good card for Xena as long as she is willing to spin the wheel and take the chance. It means that her past will be erased. The Universe seems to be Xena's friend, and to have her welfare at heart. One way or the other, Xena is going to win. It is just a matter whether Xena takes the easy road or the hard one. Either way, Xena is going to grow up whether she wants to or not. Note that Xena is not the least bit interested in spinning the wheel. She only spins the wheel in the hopes that Callisto will lead her to Gabrielle.

The Hanged Man

^[32] This card signifies that we must suspend our views and reverse the way we think about ourselves. (This becomes important when we see that Joxer is the Hanged Man). The man is hanging upside down from a living tree which signifies hope for the seeker, in this case, Gabrielle. Note that the man is not in pain, but in a state of serenity and deep thought. The card also signifies that the seeker has the gift of prophecy or is a clairvoyant. Also, the seeker must be willing to give up something that she considers valuable in order the gain something else of even more worth. Gabrielle is being asked to give up her past illusions. She is also being asked to re-examine her motives to see if they are honest. In the reverse, the card signifies somebody who is essentially selfish, and who puts on the appearance of making sacrifices, but, in reality, her first concerns are her own desires, rather than the needs of others. (This becomes important when Lila sings, "Take this scythe/ It is just a case of killing to be kind".) Gabrielle is again being warned about her motives.

The Emperor/King of Swords

^[33] Xena arrives at a hall filled with warriors, and as she approaches the throne, she sees Ares dressed in the red armor of the Emperor. The Emperor would normally hold a rod shaped like an "ankh". This is the symbol of life and is also the astrological sign for Venus. It also signifies the rule of love. We must remember that we are talking about Ares here, and love does not enter the picture. Instead of the ankh, Ares is holding a sword, the symbol of the King of Swords. In the reverse, the Emperor card signifies the misuse of power, absence of self control and a person of low moral degree. The King of Swords card, in reverse, warns of a dangerous ruinous man whose intentions are evil. One would be wise not to get caught up in this man's schemes.

^[34] Xena is stripped of the clothes of the High Priestess, and is dressed in clothes and armor in both the red of Ares and the blue of the High Priestess. Remember that Xena discarded the headdress of the High Priestess of the Celestial Temple. Ares now offers her a new headdress -- a helmet in red and blue. Ares is offering, in effect, to make Xena his High Priestess of War.

The Chariot

^[35] On The Chariot card, a prince is driving a chariot drawn by two sphinxes, a dark one and a light one, representing the duality of the human condition. It is the duty of the prince to harmonize these aspects of the human will and to bring them into balance with the will of the Universe. In THE BITTER SUITE (58/312), we are talking about Xena's human condition here and unfortunately for Xena, the Prince is Ares.

^[36] "Unfortunately" may be the wrong word here. Xena is not being forced into anything she does not want. She has both feet in the water and she is loving every minute of it. In Illusia, there are no victims; There are only volunteers. Xena is wearing the helmet and she accepts the sword that Ares passes to her. The High Priestess of the Celestial Temple carries the Torah in her arms, the High Priestess of War carries a sword.

The Empress/Queen of Pentacles

^[37] Gabrielle is wearing the crown and myrtle leaves of the Empress and the dress of the Queen of Pentacles when she enters Poteidaia. These become her signature cards. The Empress is the arbiter of Earthly wisdom just as the High Priestess is the arbiter of Celestial wisdom. If these cards are both in the reading, then these two opposites meld to become Universal Truth. Unfortunately, these cards are in the reverse, and they merely show the extent of the rift between Xena and Gabrielle.

^[38] In the reading, the Empress signifies a woman who is kind and understanding, one who believes in cooperation and consensus. She is the mother of beauty and harmony. The Queen of Pentacles signifies a woman rich in spirituality. She is one who controls the bounty of the Earth and uses this bounty justly and wisely for the good of all.

^[39] In many Tarot Decks, the stars in the pentacles are pentagrams. The stars on Gabrielle's dress are six pointed stars. Also, in some decks, the Queen is dressed in a reptilian hide garment to signify renewal. The Empress and the Queen can signify the coming of the Earth Mother when they are in convergence, and both in the reading. So note, if Xena were to kill Gabrielle, she would not only be committing murder, but she would also be committing sacrilege.

^[40] In the reverse, the Empress shows a woman who has lost much of her own personal power because she sacrificed her own needs while attempting to meet the needs of another. She signifies co-dependance, indecisiveness, and the inability to work cooperatively. In the reverse, the Queen of Pentacles shows a greedy, selfish woman who is not as she seems. The Queen of Swords is a queen of aristocrats while the Queen of Pentacles is a queen of peasants and farmers. In the reverse, these two cards help to even widen the rift between the two women.

War And Peace

^[41] Both women return to their roots, Xena to her army, and Gabrielle to Poteidaia. While we see what we expect to see in Xena's army, we are shocked to see that Poteidaia is not the idyllic farm community that we expected. We find a place were nothing changes, and where change is even discouraged, and a place where people are better off if they do not know how to think. This is the Poteidaia that the young Gabrielle was so desperate to escape, but it is now the Poteidaia that Gabrielle longs to embrace. Still, she cannot do this until she purges Xena from her life. The people of Poteidaia have told her that Xena is the cause of all her misfortunes. We are witnessing the emergence of "poor little Gabrielle"; Gabrielle the victim. Lila hands Gabrielle the scythe and tells her that by killing Xena, she is actually doing Xena a favor. It should be noted that it would also be sacrilege to kill the High Priestess.

^[42] As we saw earlier, there are no victims in Illusia; There are only volunteers. Gabrielle takes the scythe and goes to meet Xena, who is coming for Gabrielle. Gabrielle attacks Xena and Xena easily deflects the scythe and throws Gabrielle to the floor where Gabrielle lies spread-eagled and prostrate on some geometric design, as if she were an offering. Xena kneels and drives her sword into Gabrielle as if she were preforming a blood sacrifice.

Death

^[43] The stage is now set for what may be the most symbolic scene in the episode. In the Tarot Cards, Death is shown to be a skeleton holding Ares' banner while he rides over the body of a dead monarch. There is a youth, a child and a bishop in the picture. In the Tarot, Death is not supposed to be a bad thing. It is seen as a chance for renewal and rebirth. The Bishop signifies Divine Charity; the Youth represents Faith in the rebirth; while the child signifies the Hope that new life brings. The monarch signifies that no one, not even the great, can escape Death.

The Hermit/Bishop

^[44] But in THE BITTER SUITE (58/312), we see Joxer in the role of both the Bishop and the Hermit. The Hermit signifies a person who has found Universal Truth through hard work and perseverance. He is also willing to freely share his hard won truth with any who wish to partakes of it. In the reverse, it shows that both Xena and Gabrielle reject the wisdom because of their unwillingness to learn and their desire to hold on to a state of unteachablity.

^[45] Joxer is also wearing the hat of the Bishop, but this is a very dark and mournful bishop. The only god present is Ares and there is no Divine Charity. The Monarch, the youth, and the child are all aspects of Gabrielle, and she is lying dead on the floor.

^[46] Xena has been transformed into Death, but she is no one's ordinary death. She still wears the red of Ares and the blue of the Priestess. The High Priestess of War and Death are merged into one and both are under the control of Ares. Thus we see Xena and Ares executing a dance macabre over the body of Gabrielle -- over the body of Virtue. They are celebrating the death of Virtue and the finality of death. All verges on being lost, were it not for the intervention of Justice.

Justice

^[47] In both Xena and Callisto, we have seen Justice at its most primitive: the law of the jungle, the law of tooth and nail. But we have also seen a Xena who believes in a higher justice, one based on Universal Truth. Here, the Universe is intervening to remind Xena that she once knew about Universal Truth. Justice is able to break the spell that Xena is under and Death returns to the state of being the High Priestess of War. But Ares abandons Xena, so in reality, she is the High Priestess of nothing. She is now just Xena.

^[48] A door opens, Gabrielle walks onto the stage, and everyone else disappears. Gabrielle is dressed in the white robes of Purity (Rediscovered Innocence). She is wearing the reptilian hide garment, which symbolizes, rebirth, renewal, and growth. This is also symbolic of the shedding of old ideas. She still wears the myrtle in her hair. We are witnessing the birth of a new Gabrielle.

^[49] A stronger Gabrielle challenges Xena: "You Killed Me"! A bewildered Xena begins to minimize, "I only killed an illusion," as if that makes all the difference. Intent is still intent. Luckily for both Xena and Gabrielle, everything up to now has been an illusion, but from now on, everything (including the consequences) is real.

Strength

^[50] This card shows a woman dressed in the white robe of purity restraining a lion. Instead of using force, she is using love and compassion. Gabrielle is Strength and Xena is the lion. This card signifies what the new role of the reborn Gabrielle will be.

The Tower

^[51] This card shows a tower being struck by lightening and two people falling to their deaths. This card signifies that one's world view is being challenged in a radical way. This is not a bad card, but it is a traumatic one. The degree of the trauma is dependent on whether the card is in the reading, or in the reverse. The destruction of the old world view allows for the development of a new one. The seekers are being touched by the Divine, and the seeds of healing and spiritual wholeness are being planted within them.

^[52] For Xena and Gabrielle, the past is being shredded. We are witnessing the death of the old, the death of blaming and recrimination, the death of false self-destructive illusions. We are also witnessing the birth of real communication. But the birth is being stifled by accusation and anger, so it is important to move on to an even more traumatic situation in order that Xena and Gabrielle may reach catharsis. (Note that when Gabrielle and Xena are being pulled into the hole of the Wheel, for the first time in this episode, we see that they have concern for each other and Xena tries to help Gabrielle).

Judgement

^[53] In the Judgement card, we see a picture of the Angel Gabriel blowing the Judgement Day trumpet while six souls are being raised from their graves to go forth to receive their judgement. In THE BITTER SUITE (58/312) we see that Gabrielle and Xena have returned to Dahak's temple and that Gabriel has been replaced by a very dark angel. When this angel blows his trumpet, he is not raising the dead for judgement, but so that they can become judges. Xena and Gabrielle are on trial for the sin of Hate, and they are being judged by their peers. The Haters are being judged by Haters. The judges pull back their cowls to reveal Callisto, Caesar, Ares, Khrafstar, Xena and Gabrielle.

^[54] Both Xena and Gabrielle are transported back to the moment of their individual trauma. Xena is placed on the cross of Caesar, while Gabrielle is chained to Dahak's alter. The subjects of their love who are now the subjects of their hate, become their tormenters. The fact that they have allowed themselves to be controlled by hate has brought them back to this, back to the places where their hate was born. Only here where their hatred was born can they renounce hate. With their renouncement of hatred, the judges are destroyed and both Xena and Gabrielle are released.

^[55] We now see that Gabrielle is dressed in her regular clothes while Xena is dressed in the sackcloth of a penitent. The Wheel returns and opens up to reveal the world behind a veil of water and across a stream. On the other side we see Solan, who is the Sun and Gabrielle and Xena make for the veil of water. Gabrielle crosses over without hesitation, but Xena hesitates and is scalded by the water.

The Devil

^[56] The Angel of Judgement reveals himself to be Ming T'ien and he now appears in the role of the Devil. C.S. Lewis stated that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside, and nowhere is this more clear than with respect to Xena. She is being held back because of her inability to renew herself, and she cannot renew herself until she learns to forgive herself. Xena cannot begin to forgive herself until she has been forgiven by others. She finally discards her illusions and asks Gabrielle and Solan to forgive her. This they freely do. Since Xena is unable to forgive herself, her act of self-redemption becomes an act of salvation on the part of Gabrielle as Gabrielle reaches back through the veil to grab hold of Xena's hand and pull her through.

The Sun

^[57] This is a card of great joy. All the hard work is now in the past. The seekers can now begin to reconstruct their lives. The fact that Solan is the Sun should signify to Xena that everything is forgiven. Unfortunately Xena still cannot forgive herself, but she is back on the right track and she is much wiser now. The rage is gone, but Xena must realize that the soul is like a bottle: once it becomes empty, it can easily be filled again, so it is better to fill it with something good.

^[58] The real change seems to be in the new Gabrielle. Gabrielle is no longer the naive little country girl that we first met, although she keeps much of the country girl charm that makes her so endearing. What we witness is a new Gabrielle, reborn and renewed. She is now a mature young woman who understands her place in the world. She has traded her naivety (immature innocence) for wisdom (mature or rediscovered innocence).

Aftermath

^[59] We now know that Xena is back on the right path. We also know that she is both the High Priestess and the Queen of Swords, and that her destiny is to become the Spiritual Warrior. She is also Death, but only if she wants to be. Gabrielle is the Empress and the Queen of Pentacles, but she is also Strength and Humanity. She is now the Conscience Guide. In the episode ONE AGAINST AN ARMY (59/313) we see a Gabrielle refusing to let Xena stray from the path, no matter the personal consequences. In FORGIVEN (60/314) we see a Xena who still cannot forgive herself, who still considers herself to be unforgivable. But we know that despite her personal demons, Xena will be all right with Gabrielle there to help her.

Ну что ж, возвращаюсь к формату трехлетней, наверное, давности, когда карта еще не работала (что исправилось потом драйвером посвежее). Пока она некоторое время - года два-три, наверное - работала, я успела привыкнуть к хорошему)) что можно быстро записаться, и дописывать в процесссе монтажа что хочешь. Теперь для записи-сведения опять придется пользоваться ноутбуком, ну, а для слушания музыки из инета у меня старенький Soundblaster, только неуправляемый, т.к. новый драйвер с оболочкой не ставится. Звук есть, а записать - фиг, микрофонный вход не включишь. Качаю разные варианты драйвера, ставлю - пока бестолково. А мне надо, чтобы, если что закажут опять, не мотаться за ноутбуком, а быстро скачать, что надо, все сделать и отослать.
И настроения что-нибудь для себя записывать нет.

Монстрация (от слова демонстрация) — вид массового мероприятия, художественная акция в форме демонстрации с лозунгами, в которых авторы осмысляют окружающую действительность художественными методами. Зачастую содержание транспарантов выглядит предельно абсурдизированным, однако они имеют многозначность. Это действо не по сценарию, дата известна заранее (1 мая каждого года), автор обозначает лишь место и точное время, остальное — это импровизация и самовыражение участников действа. C одной стороны, все очень хорошо. Последние три дня удались: я купила джинсов и рубашек, а также пояс, который пока не знаю, с чем и как носить, но нравится жутко:
такой вот. Вчера каталась на роликах по отрезку набережной, где было поменьше народа и достаточно пространства для маневра. По ровной местности я езжу легко, все-таки длительные ролики и коньки в детстве, похоже, не забылись. Но на спусках я пищу и хватаюсь за папу - пока, в тестовых заездах, он меня сопровождает) хотя, когда мы пошли в парк (недели три назад), и нас туда не пустили, я с расстройства сьехала с очень приличной горы, не свалившись и ни во что не въехав, но это было в состоянии аффекта.) Сегодня открыла с Чайкой сезон валяния на диване под яблоней (листьев еще нет, поэтому тени яблоня почти не дает) и обугливания хлеба на костре. После Чайкиного садика я становлюсь умиротворенной пофигисткой на некоторое время. Поэтому я не слишком расстраиваюсь сегодня из-за того, что с другой стороны. А с другой стороны у меня все не очень хорошо. Слетела внешняя аудиокарта, причины неясны, эксперименты успехом не увенчиваются. Старый Soundbluster не устанавливается, почему - тоже неясно. Осталась я без звука. Ни песен послушать (я уже привыкла слушать по ходу дела песни, выкладываемые в дневники), ни клипов посмотреть. Грустно. И что делать, непонятно.

1. КРОВАВЫЙ ЗУБ / HYDNELLUM PECKII
Этот милый грибок похож на пожеванную жевательную резинку, сочащуюся кровью и пахнущую клубникой. Но не вздумайте его съесть, ибо это будет последним «лакомством», которое Вы отведаете в своей жизни.

Грибок известен человечеству с 1812 года и считается несъедобным, т.е. когда-то, в темные-претемные времена жил гений, который пожертвовал во славу науки своей жизнью, дабы предостеречь потомков от поедания этого “лакомства”. Кроме своих выдающихся внешних качеств, эта мерзость обладает антибактериальными свойствами и содержит химические вещества, разжижающие кровь. Да что там говорить, в скором времени этот гриб может стать заменой пенициллина (который, кстати, был выведен из гриба вида Penicillium notatum). Если Вам не хватает острых ощущений, и Вы намерены во чтобы то ни стало увековечить свое имя в анналах истории (премия Дарвина и звание самого тупого самоубийцы на планете Земля у вас считайте уже в кармане), то просто лизните это чудо природы…


2. КУКОЛЬНЫЕ ГЛАЗКИ / DOLL’S EYE
В лучшем случае, эта «красота» похожа на инопланетный сорняк, а в худшем на вкопанный в землю тотем с насаженными на него человеческими глазами, которым серийный убийца пометил место погребения всех своих 666 жертв. Это необычное растение получило название “кукольные глазки”. Существует так же менее говорящее название этой жути – белый воронец. Никакими особенностями, кроме своего внешнего вида данное растение не обладает, можете даже его попробовать на вкус, потом расскажете о своих ощущениях.



3. ГРИБ МОРСКОЙ АНЕМОН / SEA ANEMONE MUSHROOM
Порой, созерцая подобные творения, начинаешь задумываться о вменяемости создателя. Конечно же, бывают случаи, когда и отвратительные вещи оказываются на поверку достаточно приятными на вкус, запах… но это не тот случай: гриб, получивший название “смердящее рог осьминога”, не только отвратно выглядит, но и воняет, так, что не описать словами.



4. ДЬЯВОЛЬСКИЙ КОГОТЬ / DEVIL’S CLAW
“Дьявольский коготь” — это что-то наподобие колючек нашего репейя, которые будучи запущенными меткой рукой лучшего друга не раз запутывались в ваших волосах. Главное отличие между этими двумя прилипалами заключается во внешнем виде: если колючки репейя – маленькие симпатичные комочки, которые так и просятся в руки, то дьявольский коготь больше похож на злобного паука-людоеда, который только и ждет, чтобы вцепиться Вам в глотку. Когда то эти демонические штуковины “водились” только в Аризоне, где коренные америкосы (индейцы) плели из них ужасающего вида корзинки и выкладывали ими целые “минные поля”, которые враги предпочитали обходить стороной. Сегодня “демонические когти” уже полностью оккупировали весь Северо-запад США. Чую, скоро эта мерзость доберется и до матушки России, так что если не хотите пасть жертвой “дьявольского когтя”, то начинайте запасаться «Раундапом» и строить преградительные баррикады уже сейчас.



5. КИТАЙСКИЙ МЫШЕЦВЕТ / CHINESE BLACK BATFLOWERS
Все таки Бэтмен не случайно выбрал символом устрашения криминального населения Готема летучую мышь. Ибо эти порождения тьмы ужасны: маленькие злые глазки, тонкие лапки с огромными крючковатыми ногтищами, острые зубки, пухленькое тельце, неравномерно покрытое волосами, и огромные крылья — чем не описание жуткого монстра из очередного малобюджетного, но от этого не менее страшного, фильма ужасов? Матушка природа потрудилась на славу в попытке создать самое жуткое и вместе с тем отвратительное растение, наделив его всеми отличительными признаками летучей мыши и добавив для верности пучок жгутовидных щупалец. Это порождение детских кошмаров получило название китайский мышецвет.



6. РУКА БУДДЫ / BUDDHA’S HAND
Не знаю какой полоумный гений решил, что эта штуковина похожа на руку Будды, по мне это нечто скорее напоминает хентайные щупальца, которые вот-вот охомутают очередную грудастую красавицу. На поверку мерзкие щупальца оказываются довольно-таки съедобным, можно даже сказать вкусным, цитрусовым фруктом, который невероятно популярен в Китае и Японии. Если вспомнить сеть сортироподобных ресторанов, то не сложно понять почему китайцы балдеют от поедания этой диковинки, но вот от чопорных японцев я такого не ожидал. По сути, рука Будды, — это странного вида лимон, в котором зачастую кроме кожуры ничего и нет. Фруктина привлекает восточные народы не только необычным внешним видом, но и своими ароматическими свойствами: в Японии из него заваривают чай, а в Китае хранят дома в качестве талисмана, который приносит в дому удачу, счастье, отгоняет всякую нечисть и дарует долголетие. Еще из этих лимоновых щупалец делают варенье, мармелад и пахнущие фиалками духи. И немного о серьезном: традиционно считается, что Будда может хитро заворачивать, сворачивать и переворачивать свои пальцы вовремя молитвы и в такие моменты его руки очень похожи на эти монстровидные лимончики. Вы как хотите, но если это действительно так, то если бы мне выпала возможность встретить в темной подворотне Будду или добряка Фредди Крюгера, я бы с большой вероятностью выбрал последнего.



7. ВЕНЕРИНА МУХОЛОВКА / DIONAEA MUSCIPULA
Смею предположить, что еще каких то пару миллионов лет назад эти чудища пожирали динозавров и были полноправными хозяевами планеты. Но эволюция — это враг максимализма и все гиганты уже либо вымерли, либо для того чтобы выжить приобрели более земные размеры, поэтому сегодня мухоловка – это небольшое растение, питающиеся исключительно насекомыми, гусеницами, слизнями и лягушками. Как это работает: внутри пасти-листка расположено множество мельчайших чувствительных волосков. Жертва, заползающая на лист, раздражает эти волоски, которые в свою очередь подают сигнал к сокращению клеток внутренней части листа и “пасть” начинает закрываться. Через некоторое время внутренняя часть листа начинает выделять пищеварительную жидкость и обессиленная от безуспешных попыток выбраться наружу жертва начинает медленно перевариваться (этот процесс занимает достаточно длительное время. Н-р, чтобы переварить слизня мухоловке потребуется около недели).



8.КЕДРОВО-ЯБЛОЧНЫЙ ГНИЮЩИЙ ГРИБ / CEDAR-APPLE RUST FUNGUS
Что превращает сочное здоровое яблоко в гниющий комок мерзкого ужаса, дающего приют целому выводку червей? Если Ваш ответ кедрово-яблочный гниющий гриб (сокр. КЯГГ), то, скорее всего, Вы проявили смекалку и просто прочитали это хитрое переплетение букв, украшающее начало данного повествования! КЯГГ – грибковая инфекция, преображающая яблочные и кедровые плоды до неузнаваемости. Про эту мерзость хоть щас можно снимать фильмы ужасов: инфицированные плоды буквально за несколько месяцев превращаются в омерзительных чудовищ. Вот как это происходит: из крошечной споры грибка развивается внушительных размеров шаровидное тело – от 3.5 до 5 сантиметров в диаметре, при намокании эта мерзость расслаивается, образуя мерзопакостные усики. В результате, кедровые орешки и яблочки превращаются в маленьких злобных Ктулху.



9. РАФФЛЕЗИЯ / RAFFLESIA
Раффлезия – паразитическое растение семейства молочайных (Euphorbiacea) с самыми большими цветками в мире, некоторые из которых достигают в диаметре более одного метра и массы более одиннадцати килограммов. Паразит проводит большую часть своей жизни в тканях растения-хозяина, в роли которого выступают лианы из семейства виноградовых, произрастающие во влажных тропических лесах Индонезии и Филиппин. У этого необычного растения отсутствует стебель и корни, а его основную часть составляет гигантский цветок с пятью мясистыми лепестками. Гигантский паразит был открыт еще в 1818 году, во время экспедиции Томаса Стэмфорда Раффлза Раффлезия на остров Суматра. Найденный тогда экземпляр был 1 метр в диаметре и весил 6 килограмм. Путешественников поразил не столько сам цветок и его невероятные размеры, а ужасный трупный запах, который исходил от него. Из-за этого необычного запаха цветки раффлезии опыляют обычные мухи. Кстати цветки – это единственное, что осталось у раффлезии от ее родственников – «нормальных» покрыто семенных растений. Ведя паразитирующий образ жизни на «теле» лиан, раффлесия полностью утратила всякие признаки растения – корни, стебель, способность к фотосинтезу, а все питательные вещества паразит получает из «тела» хозяина. Проросток раффлезии постепенно внедряется в корни растения-хозяина с помощью присосок (гаусториев). Те части проростка, которые по какой-либо причине оказались вне «тела» хозяина просто отмирают. Предположительно, семена раффлезии, пробуждаются к прорастанию под воздействием выделений потенциальных растений-хозяев. Эти же вещества и ориентируют направление роста проростков.



10. КИТАЙСКИЙ РУНИЧЕСКИЙ ЦВЕТОК / CHINESE FLEECEFLOWER
Плоды “рунического цветка” обладают пугающими формами, благодаря которым они похожи на маленьких картофельных людей. Китайцы выкорчевывают этих крошечных подземных жителей из земли, дабы использовать их нагие беззащитные тела, как панацею от всех болезней, в числе которых импотенция, рак, СПИД, слабоумие и т.д., и т.д … Прежде чем превратиться в живительный порошок, человечки подвергаются всевозможным пыткам, в числе которых: кипячение, освежевывание, замачивание в самогоне и расчленение. Попомните мои слова, скоро картофелины устанут от китайского гнета и восстанут против всего человечества. Так что несколько раз подумайте, прежде чем решитесь восстановить свое “моджо” при помощи “рунического цветочка”.



11. ПОРКУПИНСКИЙ ТОМАТ / PORCUPINE TOMATO
Поркупинский томат – произрастающее на Мадагаскаре полутораметровое чудовище, листья которого покрыты устрашающего вида колючками оранжевого цвета. У этого шипастого чуда-юда невероятно красивые фиолетовые цветки, собранные в гроздья, которыми он приманивает к себе своих жертв: и вот вы уже наклоняетесь, чтобы сорвать один из них и оказываетесь насажанными на “смертоносные” шипы. Кроме того, что поркупинский томат колюч и ядовит, его еще практически невозможно убить: большинство химикатов ему нипочем и он может пережить лютые холода и даже сильную засуху. Как Вы уже поняли это творение природы – монстрообразный сорняк, который поставил целью своего существование захват вашего приусадебного участка. За короткое время одно растение может наплодить целую армию поркупинских томатиков, которые за несколько недель превратятся в 1.5 метровых гигантов, каждый из которых будет сражаться до последнего и прольет не один литр вашей крови, прежде чем будет с корнем выкорчеван из земли.

UPD: Спасибо участвующим! На самом деле, хочется рассказать что-то о себе, но меня, похоже, разговорить могут только флэшмобы)) так и живем.

Alison McL - ...и гитара

1. В детстве я хотела играть на пианино. Подбирала по слуху. Папа играл на семиструнной гитаре и пел. Любимой у меня была песня Высоцкого про нечисть.)
2. Лет в 16 меня шарахнуло Стингом, и я резко начала учиться играть на гитаре. По советскому самоучителю с нотами всяких народных песен и этюдов)) довольно бесполезное занятие... бросила года через полтора. И забросила гитару надолго.
3. Снова резко взялась за гитару уже после университета. По табам разучивала песни Queen авторства Мэя. А именно - "34" и "Long Away". Но хватило меня опять ненадолго. Но в этот заход я хотя бы выучила латинские обозначения нот.
4. Еще через пару лет взялась за гитару более основательно, на этот раз меня шарахнуло "Led Zeppelin". Соответственно, по табам разбирались их песни, песни Queen, Стинга, Рода Стюарта и других зарубежных артистов. Песни на русском языке меня почему-то не притягивали. С тех пор особо надолго не бросаю, хотя случаются и длительные перерывы - от месяца до полугода.
5. А гитара, за которую я все время бралась, была хорошая акустическая шестиструнка, немецкая. Ее родители приобрели, кажется, когда катались по Волге на теплоходе в качестве свадебного путешествия. Соответственно, сейчас в записях участвует она же. Я экспериментировала со струнами - чистый нейлон мне не нравился, чистый металл не давал настроить гитару. Лучший вариант - три тонкие струны нейлоновые, три толстые - медные. Отличный звук, на мой вкус.
6. Со времен последнего захода по гитаре я стала писать песни с гитарой в руках. Раньше для этого служили клавиши, хотя одну песню я написала и записала в универские годы, практически вообще не умея играть. Записывались отдельные звуки, аккорды, маленькие кусочки соло, и вся эта каша собиралась в нечто осмысленное. Вот она:

7. Сейчас мне уже лень подключать синтезатор - проще под гитару что-то слабать и записать)
8. А играть как следует я так и не научилась. Ни одну песню не могу сыграть целиком без ошибок. Поэтому пишется все частями - но уже не такими мелкими, как когда-то.
9. Года три назад мы с папой купили мне все-таки недорогую электрогитару) она темно-зеленая)) но, как это у меня часто бывает с техникой, я начала ее бояться и считать, что я ее недостойна. Да и интерес к музыке и к самодеятельности существенно снизился.В результате пока имеем очень мало моих песен, сыгранных на электрогитаре.
10. Я никогда не играла и не пела под гитару на публике. И весь институт авторской песни меня не очень привлекает) я считаю, что это неплохо, всякие сборища, фестивали, но - без меня)) хотя я бывала на концертах авторской песни, и некоторые авторы и их песни мне нравились просто очень, даже есть записи и я их до сих пор иногда слушаю. Из общепризнанных авторов уважаю Иващенко и Васильсева и Дольского.
11. Я фанатею по рок-гитаристам)) особенно по Мэю и Пейджу.

Dazzling Dana ...и ночь
Это посложнее будет))
1. Я сова. Только под вечер я начинаю как-то раскачиваться, а весь день обдолбанная и хочу спать. Если меня не будят утром, я съезжаю на ночной образ жизни.
2. Раньше я любила слушать музыку по ночам. В темноте, в посели, в наушниках.
3. В возрасте начальной школы у меня была бессонница. Я не спала до рассвета (летом), читала все подряд. После рассвета засыпала. В позапрошлом году жила по такому же режиму.
4. Со Львом и Виктором мы, в наши дачные заезды, шлялись по пригородным шоссе по ночам. Впрочем, заездов было всего два.
5. Я люблю "ночную жизнь" - пьянки, танцы)) но последние года два я по ночам все-таки хочу спать)
6. МБ (Instassa) сочинила и спела песню на стихи Хармса "Ночь". Я сделала к ней шумовую аранжировку. Вот что получилось:

7. Пару лет я жила на даче одна где-то по неделе, ночью по комнате шлялись разнообразные насекомые.
8. Еще я по ночам слушала радио. Музыкальные программы "Эха Москвы" и "Серебряного Дождя".
9. Я не люблю ночевать не дома. Всеми силами стараюсь попасть домой, чтобы не спать фиг знает где. Но несколько раз ночевала у подруг в студенческом общежитии. Это был такой как бы экстрим.
10. Однажды я ездила с сотрудниками пьянствовать на природу. Мы напились и купались голые.
11. Пару раз в университетские годы я отмечала свой день рождения дома с друзьями с вечера до утра, мы стояли на ушах всю ночь, бедные соседи.))

Приснилось, что мои мысли и действия комментирует звучащий в моей голове приятный мужской голос с ироничными интонациями. Комментировал в стиле дневника  ИЖДУ, но спокойным, размеренным тоном. Потом я проснулась, почувствовала, что хочу есть, и голос сказал: "Сыр. Сыр. Сыр. Сыр. Не хотите ли сыра? НЕЕЕЕТ!..."
